After working as a sculptor for the last twenty years, I have recently started to devote my artistic skills in two-dimensional work. In particular, I have become quite interested in paper collage. The idea behind the images is to convey the confusion, and saturation of information that is constantly bombarding our modern lives. The bits of material that I gather from a variety of media come together to produce the effect of a complex web that represents our own, often conflicting, visual perceptions. Just as in real life, paper, plastic, wood, metal and other elements come together to create an image from and of today's life.
Inspired and both repelled by the excess that surrounds us through print, internet, radio and television, my work often serves as an outlet for my frustrations to over-exposure to constant noise, garbage, feedback and flashing lights that seem ubiquitous. Yet the compositions are figurative, not abstract. The "subjects" or scenes that this collage technique creates are in contradiction to the tension and constant movement inherent in the style. These portraits, still-lives and landscapes, are, in their final state of calm, a cathartic opposite of the chaotic world they inhabit. It is this balance, between a technique filled with disorder, randomness, and jagged edges and a subject that is by its nature, filled with pattern, harmony/symmetry, and continuity that express my own metaphysical point of view.
